Theatreship presents Cinema Unbound: The Creative Worlds of Powell + Pressburger, part of a BFI major UK-wide celebration of one of the greatest and most enduring filmmaking partnerships: Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger.    Over six events, we celebrate their bold, subversive and iconoclastic films, pairing each with contemporary and complementary performance.

I Know Where I'm Going (with Martin Scorsese introduction)

UK 1945.  91 mins

Rating: U

Join us for a screening of Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger’s heady romantic masterpiece I Know Where I Am Going with a video introduction by Martin Scorsese.

Headstrong Joan Webster (the wondrous Wendy Hiller) sets off, wedding dress in tow, to marry a rich older man on his remote Hebridean island. Stranded on Mull thanks to the weather, Joan finds herself struggling to cope with the unplanned turn of events. Powell and Pressburger weave their course of true love through flashes of surrealism, a life-threatening whirlpool and an ancient curse, disarming and enchanting in equal measure.

Along with the main feature, Theatreship is presenting a live, bespoke music performance by violinist and artist in residence at the Southbank centre: IMVN and cellist Abi Asisa. This piece is inspired by and in dialogue with the film.

IMVN is an artist, violinist and producer from London. Embracing a genreless approach, her work transcends conventional boundaries, showcasing an ethereal and forward-thinking perspective. A former dancer, IMVN seamlessly incorporates a captivating theatricality into her artistic expression, which plays an indispensable role in defining her unique identity.

Producer and cellist Abi Asisa, likes to defy conformity and blur the boundaries between jazz, pop and experimental music. Classically trained, Abi Asisa discovered London’s jazz community when she moved there at the age of 19. This inspired the Brighton native to experiment with new ways of playing her instrument, influenced by artists such as Oliver Coates, Tirzah and Eartheater.

Theatreship is committed to broadening access to the arts - we know that ticket price is a huge barrier for some. If the regular ticket price is beyond what you feel able to afford, please don't hesitate to email us at tickets@theatreship.co.uk and we will do everything we can to support and accommodate.  Please also contact us for access information or anything else you'd like to discuss.

If you are intending to buy a ticket, BFI has a short survey they would like attendees to fill in.  It's optional and anonymous but will help Theatreship receive funding in the future: https://online1.snapsurveys.com/LON202324/?P=LON28
